Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress leader and chief minister of West Bengal will skip the meeting on Maoists hosted by MHA. The meeting which is scheduled to take place on Monday, will be attended by Chief Ministers of all the states.

West Bengal Home Secretary Malay Dey will represent West Bengal in the meeting which will have discussions about the growing problem of maoists extremists and naxals. The meeting is called in the wake of recent attack on CRPF jawans, which resulted in 25 casualties in Chhatisgarh’s Sukma.

Sources from the state government stated that the chief minister will be busy with prior engagements and will not be able to make it to Delhi. Mamata Banerjee had also skipped a meeting hosted by Prime Minister last month for the governing council of Niti Aayog. Though she had deputed finance minister Amit Mitra to attend the same, he could not do the same after Prime Minister made it clear that only chief minister or deputy chief minister could represent the state.

Amidst the growing political tussle within the country, the move of skipping the crucial meets by Mamata Banerjee gives a signal that she is publicly opposing BJP and prime minister. It will not be a surprise if she floats an Anti-BJP coalition to check NDA in 2019 general elections.

However, ET quoted a senior TMC leader saying that the issue of Naxals has ended in West Bengal months after Mamata Banerjee became chief minister. In 2011, one of the key strategist of Naxals, Kishenji was killed in an encounter and not a single casualty has been reported after that.
