MCD elections 2017

On Wednesday, the results of MCD election came out in favour of Bhartiya Janata Party, which continued its growing dominance in the national politics. Out of the 270 seats, where polls were held, BJP came out as winner in 181 seats. Riding on the recent success and ever-increasing popularity of Narendra Modi, BJP thrashed Aam Aadmi Party and Congress with big margins and gave a clear signal for the next assembly elections in the national capital.

Three corporations were under polls in the round. In North Municipal Corporation, BJP won 64 seats whereas AAP won 21, Congress won 15 and others won on 3 seats. In South Municipal Corporation, the figures were 70, 16, 12, 6 in favour of BJP, AAP, Congress and others respectively. In east municipal corporation too, BJP showed its dominance by winning 47 seats. Other parties including AAP and Congress won 11 and 3 respectively. 3 seats went to other candidates. One seat each in East and North Delhi did not have polls as there was death of contesting candidates.

In the last MCD elections, BJP had won 138 seats, which has gotten better to 181 in these elections.

Once the results started to come in and BJP started to lead, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first one to tweet and greet the people of Delhi.

Soon after the results were clear, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal too took to twitter and congratulated BJP for the massive win.

Though Aam Aadmi Party has been blaming it on EVMs throughout, Arvind Kejriwal did not mention the same in his tweets today. He refrained from putting allegations and said that he will look forward to work with the newly elected members of civic bodies.

This win must have come as a great relief to BJP, who were handed one of the biggest defeats in the history of Delhi Assembly elections two years ago. Aam Aadmi Party had secured a landslide victory by winning 67 out of 70 seats. However, in recent times, AAP has not been in best of terms. With big hopes in Punjab and Goa, the party had contested elections and both the states completely discarded AAP. Recently in Rajouri Garden by poll and now in MCD elections, the party has suffered huge loss and the territory, which was considered as fortress for AAP after they won in 2015, now seems to be slipping away.

Congress did hope to get a revival from these elections, however, all it got was a huge setback. Taking the responsibility, Ajay Maken resigned from the post of Delhi Congress Chief on moral grounds.
