Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) on Monday Announced to field former Union minister Agatha K. Sangma from the Tura Lok Sabha seat while support United Democratic Party’s Jemino Mawthoh from the Shillong constituency.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while briefing the media on Monday said that “The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance has taken a call, we will be fielding a common candidate from both the parliamentary seats of the state –  Shillong and Tura seats”

Agatha K Sangma has served as the Union Minister in Manmohan Singh UPA-II Government after winning Lok Sabha Polls 2009 from Tura Lok Sabha Seat. He later in 2018 won state polls from South Tura Assembly seat. However, he later resigned from the seat to allow Conrad Sangma to win polls.

Tura Parliamentary seat has been vacant since last year when the then sitting MP Conrad Sangma resigned to become Meghalaya Chief Minister.

While UDP’s Jemino has been Lawmaker from Nongthymmai Assembly constituency till he had lost in 2018 Meghalaya Assembly Polls. He is expected to face a tough fight from sitting Congress MP Vincent H Pala.

Conrad Sangma’s announcement came days after Bhartiya Janta Party declared that it will not align with any party in Meghalaya in upcoming General Elections 2019. The Party said that it will go alone in the North-East State that has two parliamentary seats in the Lower House – Shillong and Tura.

Currently, Bhartiya Janta Party is a party Coalition Government with National Peoples Party(NPP). Both NPP and BJP in the state is under North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and Meghalaya Democratic Alliance(MDA).

BJP decision came after Meghalaya Democratic Alliance failed to come in any consensus for two Lok Sabha Seats.

While Election Commission had on Sunday declared schedule for General Elections 2019. General Elections are slated for April-May this year that would spread on Seven Phases starting from April 11 to May 19. Counting of Votes and Results for the mega Battle of ballots will be announced on May 23 four days after the 7th phase of voting.

Meghalaya will vote in a single phase on April 11 on its two parliamentary seats.
