Hitting back at the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for advocating the repeal of the special act of 370 on Jammu and Kashmir saying that it gives the state special status, Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday replied that the relationship between the center and J&K will be over if the article 370 of the constitution is scrapped.

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief said that the article 370 was a bridge between union and J&K and if the special provision of the constitution will be revoked, then New Delhi will have to renegotiate its relationship with J&K.

The statement of Mufti was a reply to the Arun Jaitley’s blog that said Article 35 A is “constitutionally vulnerable” and is an impediment to the economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. The article, incorporated into the Indian constitution in 1954, grants special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mufti said, “Jaitely mist understand this. It is not an easy thing to say. If you scrap [Article] 370, your relation with Jammu and Kashmir will be over. In that case, the state will have to rethink if they want to be a part of India or not. Because you have given us a special position in the constitution of India and you will break that position.”

In February, state leaders Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah raised their consequences if there is any interference with Article 35A of the constitution.

Demands have surfaced time and again to revoke Article 370 along with Article 35 (A), which grants special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
