The final electoral roll has been published in the poll bound state of Mizoram. There has been an increase in the number of voters by 1.14 per cent over the last voters list published in January this year. There has also been an increase in the number of female voters as opposed to males.

The total number of voters has been recorded at 7,68,181, out of which 3,93,685 female voters and 3,74,496 male voters.

The State Chief Electoral Officer SB Shashank while addressing the media had said, “The female voters outnumbered their male voters by 19,189 this time too. The records are from all the eight districts of Mizoram”. He also said that this figure will be updated as the electoral rolls will be revised till the last day of filing nomination. “In seven of the eight districts, except Mamit, the number of women voters is higher than male electorate,” he added further.

Among all the eight districts Aizawl which has 14 assemblies has recorded the highest number of voters at 2,88,322 followed by Lunglei district at 1,04,930, which has 7 assembly constituencies. The least number of voters are recorded at 38,843 in the district of Siaha.

The CEO has said that preparations for the upcoming elections are in full swing. The state has a 40-member assembly seats and the term will expire on December 15. “In seven of the eight districts, except Mamit, the number of women voters is higher than male electorate,” the official added.

Mizoram’s total population is 10,91,014 (2011 Census). As currently the Congress party is ruling the state, which is the last north eastern state the party is in power  it will be interesting to see whether the BJP can make a mark here and paint it saffron as well. The polls are likely to be held in November end this year.
