AICC spokesperson Dr Ajoy Kumar in his statement to the reporters alleged the Modi government to be Anti-farmer. He said that the Modi government has failed to provide any support or take any measures to stop the suicides of the farmers. Further adding the facts he said that 12,600 peasants committed suicide in 2015, out of which 8,007 were farmers while the rest were agriculture labourers.

He said that Modi government is a curse of death for farmers. These farmers are committing suicides as they are unable to get any help from the government, the Centre has failed to provide farm loans, hike minimum support price and procure crops. Accusing the Modi government for being partial he said that, in the past three years Rs 1,54,000 crore loans for businessmen were passed by the BJP-led government, but nothing was done for the farmers.

Ajoy Kumar also alleged that, in 2016, Rs 17,184.79 crore was paid to insurance companies, while compensation paid to farmers was only Rs 6,806.48 crore. He further added that production of wheat dropped from 288.8 lakh tonne in 2015-16 to 229.62 lakh tonne in 2016-17, while rice production dropped by 37.83 lakh tonne. Schemes like National Food Security Mission and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana were badly affected due to reduced spending, he said.

Kumar also Blamed the Centre for “failing” to provide relief to states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during drought over the last three years.
