TR Zeliang was the Chief Minister of Nagaland until February 2017, when Shürhozelie Liezietsu replaced him. Zeliang claims majority support in the assembly and was also in the line to claim the CM’s post again. He is also the Chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN). Zeliang was in New Delhi on Monday to meet the governor, PB Acharya.

Liezietsu is Chief of Naga People’s Front (NPF) party and also the Chief Minister of the state. After he assumed office in February, he has expelled many ministers and MLAs from his party on the account of them practising anti-party activities. Rebel MLAs are protesting against the CM in Assam’s Kaziranga.

Recently, the CM has replaced his predecessor and the Chairman of DAN also on Monday, saying that now the post will be held by Kuzholuzo Azo Nienu.

A senior NPF leader, in his statement, accused Liezietsu of practising favouritism and nepotism and doing family-centric politics. These allegations come as result of the CM naming his son Khriehu Liezietsu, as an adviser to the Chief Minister. Though he refused to accept the position, citing “other pressing public engagements”. He had also vacated 10 Northern Angami-I seats, for his father to become the MLA. Criticising to which an NPF party member said “Liezietsu has massacred parliamentary democracy by clinging on to the chair with the support of just ten MLAs in a house of 60.”
