Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a package of Rs 2000 crore for flood hit areas in northeasters states. The recent floods in Assam and nearby states have killed 76 people and over a million citizens have been affected by the same.

Making this announcement, Finance Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that the Prime Minister has allocated additional 100 crore rupees to form a team of scientists, technocrats and beaurocrats from state and central government. The team will study the course of Brahmaputra river and will try to find a permanent solution to the frequent floods in the state.

He also added that the prime minister is aware of the promptness of the matter and the first tranche of the relief package, Rs 250 crores is likely to be released today itseld. A total of 300 crore rupees has already been issued by the central government.

The announcement took place on Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam, where he was inspecting the flood hit areas. He arrived at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport in the morning at 10 am and he was immediately taken to Khanapara area in a helicopter of Indian Air Force. Narendra Modi was received by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

The Prime Minister later held meetings with Assam ministers, alliance partners of the BJP-led government in the state, and the Chief Ministers of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, at Assam Administrative Staff College in Khanapara.
