Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reached China on Monday and was given a warm welcome by the Chines President Xi Jinping on his arrival. The Indian Prime Minister is on a four day trip to China to attend the BRICS summit hosted by China and will also pay a visit to Myanmar during his return.

Inaugurating the BRICS summit on 4 Sep, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that BRICS countries should maintain diplomatic values in solving the vivid issues. While Narendra Modi had expressed that during the BRICS summit he will have the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with leaders of other nations also apart from Russia and China.

China being the host will be facing a lot of pressure as it will not be able to display any extreme opinions and rather will have to focus on getting to get to a consensual joint declaration that can be adopted all the nations. This is exactly the way India had felt when it was hosting the Goa summit last year.

The Indian Prime Minister and the Chinese President is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting today and a series of issues are likely to be brought up during the meeting between both the leaders. The major issues being India’s concerns over CPEC trespassing Jammu and Kashmir, India’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese reluctance to ban Masood Azhar and its backing of Pakistan despite terror concerns.

All the leaders of the participating countries arrive at Dialogue of Emerging Market & Developing Countries being held in Xiamen.

India Prime Minister while addressing the gathering talked about cooperation with developing economies. Highlighting the slogan of the Modi led government in India, and underlining India’s economic approach he said that development is the key focus of India and his government is focussing on ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’. Further stressing on the aim of development Modi spoke about India’s commitment to the development of India and its neighbourhood, giving the example of South Asia satellite. He also told that the African Development Bank chose India for its first meeting outside Africa. Through out his address, Narendra Modi focused on the African Development Bank chose India for its first meeting outside Africa.

Narendra Modi also requested all the countries to give global cooperation on terrorism, cyber security and climate change.

He also asked the BRICS to team up with the International Solar Alliance to exploit the solar energy and solar power.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday in his address after the inauguration said that BRICS is an important global unit and without its participation, global challenges cannot be resolved effectively and hence requested the BRICS to make the international order more just and equitable. He also said that BRICS need to forge unity to jointly advance solutions for international peace and development.

“We need to make the international order more just and equitable. Our ever closer ties require that we five countries play more active in global governance. Without our participation, many pressing global challenges cannot be effectively resolved,” Xi told the gathering.
On Tuesday while speaking at the at Dialogue of Emerging Market & Developing Countries in Xiamen Xi Jinping said focused on the need to unite as one against the global cause of climate change. Indirectly targeting US President Donald Trump, XI said that, ” the world economy is facing growing risks and uncertainties from countries turning inward on trade and resisting combating climate change. Multilateral trade negotiations are having a difficult time. The implementation of the Paris agreement on climate change is encountering resistance. He further congratulated the BRICS for the Belt and Road project, saying that the initiative has received a good response. “Four years ago, I put forward the idea of building a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st century Maritime Silk Road. The initiative received a warm response from the international community. In May this year, China hosted a successful Belt and Road forum for international cooperation, ” the Chinese President told.
Following the address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first bilateral meeting after the Doklam standoff that lasted for more than two months between the two nations. During the meeting, Narendra Modi congratulated Xi Jinping for the successful launch of the BRICS summit. The Prime Minister was accompanied by senior officials including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar.
While the Chinese delegations included President Xi Jinping, Chief Spokesperson Lu Kang, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and State Councilor Yang Jiechi. The Chinese Presiden said that China is prepared to work with India and seek guidance from the latter over the five principles of Panchsheel. He also added that India and China are each other’s major neighbours and world’s two largest economies. During the meeting is Xi also told Modi that keeping in mind the interest of both the countries healthy and stable bilateral ties will continue between the two.

This was the last meeting attended by the Indian Prime Minister here, before leaving for his visit to Myanmar.
