In what can be seen as another setback to Sharad Pawar‘s Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra, its legislator from Akole Assembly constituency Vaibhav Pichad on Saturday announced that he will quit the party to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking about his decision to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pichad told media that he had held discussions with his supporters at Akole in Ahmednagar District to seek their opinion and feedback. ‘Most of my supporters want me to join BJP’, he said as quoted by ANI.

Further talking about his plan to jump ship, Vaibhav Pichad said he will join the saffron party very soon. He also praised Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and said that he has assured him of providing all sort of help to solve the problems of his constituency.

Vaibhav is son of senior NCP leader and former state minister Madhukar Pichad.

While last week, NCP Mumbai Chief Sachin Ahir on Thursday joined hands with Shiv Sena in presence of party president Uddhav Thackeray. The development comes months before the State Assembly polls.

While in another development, NCP leader Chitra Kishor Wagh also resigned from the primary membership of the party. Wagh also tendered her resignation from the President of party’s Mahila Wing, Nationalist Mahila Congress Maharashtra Pradesh.

The recent developments came amid speculations of another NCP Leader Chhagan Bhujbal, wanted to jump ship. However, Bhujal junked the reports and said that all news is baseless and false.”

In past few days, NCP suffered many setbacks with leaders jumping ship just months ahead of the state polls. The crisis within the party started months after it faced a crushing defeat in the national polls.

It should be noted that both – Congress and NCP – forged an alliance in the state in the national polls. However, it faced a humiliating defeat and could only bag 5 Lok Sabha seats out of the 48 Lok Sabha seat of the state.
