Janata Dal (United) and BJP led NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha on Thursday by gaining 125 votes. His contender and Opposition nominee, Congress MP BK Hariprasad got 105 votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the House during the elections, he congratulated Harivansh Narayan Singh and said, “He (Singh) had earlier run a column on how the parliamentarians of the country should work. Little did he know that he will one day be the Deputy Chairperson of the House. We all will benefit from his experience.”
Praising the Deputy Chairperson, PM Modi said, “Harivansh Ji is well read and has written a lot. He has served society for years”.He added playfully, “With him (Singh) in the Rajya Sabha, things are now hari bharose, hari kripa”.
In a bid to boost its relations with JD(U), BJP nominated first time Parliamentarian and former journalist Singh, who happens to have close relations with JD(U) chief and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. The BJP alliances have been complaining about their neglect in the NDA.
Opposition Leader of the Rajya Sabha, Congress lawmaker Ghulam Nabi Azad also congratulated the newly elected Deputy Chairman. He said,”In elections, someone wins and someone loses. But the Deputy Chairman is no longer a part of any single party. He belongs to the country now. In fact, I believe that Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the House should in-fact support the Opposition as they are more undernourished than that of the ruling party.”
After the abstention of two MPs from the DMK and one from Trinamool Congress, and YSR Congress staying out of the elections, the votes of the opposition fell. Due to the abstention by other regional parties as well, the majority mark fell to 119 and NDA candidate smoothly won by receiving 125 votes.
