The former Chief Ministers and leaders of powerful political parties of Jammu and Kashmir – Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah – on Monday was taken into preventive arrest on Monday hours after the Union Government announced to revoke Article 370 from the valley, that gives the state a special status tag.

Reportedly both, Mehbooba Mufti of Peoples’ Democratic Party, and National Conference (NC) working president Omar Abdullah, were taken to a state VVIP Guest House, Hari Niwas, on Monday.

Mehbooba Mufti was taken into preventive arrest after she tried to come out of her house, where she was under house arrest.

Both the leaders slammed the Central government for scrapping Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Taking to Twitter, Former CM Mehbooba Mufti said that the Union Government has betrayed.

‘Today the people of Jammu & Kashmir who reposed their faith in institutions of India like parliament & Supreme Court feel defeated & betrayed. By dismembering the state & fraudulently taking away what is rightfully & legally ours, they have further complicated the Kashmir dispute’, she said in a tweet.

While the National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah also comes down heavily on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He issued a statement on scrapping of Article 370 and other decisions announced by Government of India (GOI) and said that the decision is shocking.

‘Government of India (GOI)’s unilateral and shocking decisions today are a total betrayal of the trust that the people of Jammu & Kashmir had reposed in India when the State acceded to it in 1947. The decisions will have far-reaching and dangerous consequences’, Abdullah said in a statement.

In a quick turn of events, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, and Sajad Lone – the three prominent faces of Jammu and Kashmir politics were put under house arrest late on Sunday.

The development came on the backdrop of the Upper House of the parliament, Rajya Sabha, on Monday, gave its nod to the resolution scrapping Article 370 from the valley that gives special status to the state.

The Rajya Sabha approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Bill 2019, that sought to divide the state into two territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Jammu and Kashmir as a one Union Territory will have a legislature along with an L-G, while Ladakh without legislature.
