Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference (NC) Working President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday had a war of words over Twitter hours after the Rajya Sabha passed the Triple Talaq Bill with Abdullah blaming PDP MPs over staging a walkout.
Taking to Twitter, Omar Abdullah slammed PDP Parliamentarians and accused them of making the way easy for passage of the bill in Rajya Sabha. Responding to Mehbooba Mufti‘s tweet that has raised questions on the need of the bill, Abdullah said, ‘Mehbooba Mufti ji, you might want to check how your members voted on this bill before tweeting. I understand they abstained which helped the government with the numbers needed to pass the bill. You can’t help the government & then “fail to understand need to pass”!
He had responded to Mebooba Mufti’s tweet raising the questions of the need of the Bill. ‘Fail to understand the need to pass the triple talaq bill especially since the Supreme Court had already declared it illegal. Undue interference seemingly to punish Muslims. Given the current state of the economy, should this really have been a priority?’, said Mehbooba Mufti at first.

However, soon after Omar Abdullah blamed the PDP MPs over the issues. Mehbooba took to Twitter and hit back by saying,’Omar Sahab, I suggest you get off your moral high horse since it was your own party that expelled Soz Sahab for voting against the BJP in 1999. FYI (For Your Information) in parliament, abstention is essentially a no vote’.
However, the National Conference (NC) leader was quick to react to Mehbooba’s claim and asked if she needs a 21-year-old incident to defend her party.
He, in a tweet, said, ‘Madam, is recounting an incident from TWENTY years ago the best you can do to defend PDP duplicity? So you are accepting you instructed your MPs to abstain. And no an abstention is NOT a no vote, a no vote is a no vote. An abstention helped the BJP this time’.

The Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with 99 members voting in favor and 84 voting against the bill in the final division.
The bill was passed amid the uproar from the Opposition demanding to send the bill to select committee. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government, which does not have a clear majority in the Rajya Sabha, managed to push the bill after parties like AIADMK and JD-U staged a walkout. AIADMK has 11 MPs in Rajya Sabha, while JD-U has 6. Naveen Patnaik‘s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supported the bill.
In the meantime, at least 5 from Congress, some MPs from parties like Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, BSP, TRS, and YSRCP also abstain from the voting on the bill. NCP President Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, and Jharna Das Baidya of CPI-M were also absent from the house during voting on the bill.
Now the bill is just a step away from becoming a law, and it just needs the President’s approval.
The Triple Talaq Bill, Muslim Women Protection Bill, aimed to protect the rights of the married women by prohibiting the practice. The new Bill will deem the practice ‘illegal’, with the husband supposedly facing a prison sentence of three years.
