Reservation for the SC’s, ST’s and OBC’s has always been subjected to much criticism and has also been an issue which has drawn much political debate. In the backdrop of such claims by the opposition the Prime Minister was subjected to the same question to which he has clearly stated that ‘reservation is here to stay.’

“The objectives of our Constitution and dreams of Dr. Babasaheb are still incomplete. It is the responsibility of every one of us to fulfill his dream and reservations are an important tool to achieve this,” Prime Minister Modi said.

In an interview to a news agency he clearly spoke that refuted reports claiming that the caste-based reservations would end and clarified that reservation was here to stay and that those who politicise the idea has ‘vested interest’ and is the reason why Babasaheb Ambedkar’s dreams were never fulfilled.

“Before any crucial election, there are vested interest groups who will raise a bogey that Bharatiya Janata Party will abolish reservations and sections of the media will amplify this,” he added.

Reiterating the vision of Babasaheb Ambedkar, he recounted that, “The dreams of Babasaheb are the strength of this nation and we are committed to fulfilling them. Our Mantra is Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and to achieve this, it is most important to protect the rights of the poor, marginalized, downtrodden, Dalits, Tribals and OBCs,”

In his interview, he also spoke about the Mandal commission and how the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had spoken about the initiatives to be taken to enhance the position of several Indians who are suffering under caste- based oppression.

“I would request you all to see the kind of things our former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi said about the Mandal Commission. On the floor of the Parliament, he opposed it tooth and nail. The situation in his party is no different today,” he said talking about the history of reservation policies in India.
