Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sought the support of the Congress and other Opposition parties for supporting and making a passage for the Triple Talaq Bill in Parliament.

Speaking in a joint session of Parliament where he was replying to a debate on the motion of thanks to the President for his address, PM Modi said this issue should not be linked with religion and all parties should support it.

Slamming the Congress PM Modi said, ‘The Country has given many opportunities to the Congress, but didn’t utilize it. Even when the Supreme Court gave a verdict on Shah Bano Case they failed to bring Uniform Civil Code and did nothing to protect Muslim Women’.

He also read out a quote purportedly by Congress Leader, ‘If they (Muslims) want to be in the gutter, let them be’.

On which, Congress raised slogans and sought for proof. PM Modi said, ‘Will send you a Youtube Link’.

He added that his government has brought a Triple Talaq Bill, and now Congress should support it and correct its mistake.

Seeking support from Congress and other opposition parties, PM Modi in Lok Sabha said, ‘It has nothing to do with the Religion’.

The Union Government had on Friday last week tabled the Triple Talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha with opposition parties including Congress MP Shahi Tharoor opposing the introduction of Triple Talaq Bill.

Speaking in the House, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, ‘Rights of Muslim women will be protected. It is about justice and empowerment of women’.

Earlier, the Union Cabinet on June 12 approved a fresh bill to ban the instant triple talaq. Earlier, the  Triple Talaq Bill was passed by Lok Sabha in December last year amid opposition uproar with 245 MPs voted were in favor of the bill, 11 voted against it. However, it got stuck in the upper House, Rajya Sabha, as the government has no majority there.

The Bill passed by the previous government in Lok Sabha was lapsed after the dissolution of 16th Lok Sabha.

The new Bill will deem the practice ‘illegal’, with the husband supposedly facing a prison sentence of three years. The BJP led government had many amendments to the original Bill after it faced a lot of criticism from opposition parties. It should be noted that the earlier bill doesn’t have the provision of Bail.

Among the most controversial bills that lapsed were Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016, Triple Talaq Bill, Adhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that was cleared by Lok Sabha but got stuck in the upper House of the Parliament.

The new government will give a push to all such bills in the coming days.
