Prime minister, Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone of Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Corridor in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Narendra Modi on 8th March laid the foundation stone for the the Rapid Transit System near the Hindon Air Force Station via video conferencing, as per the information shared by NCRTC(National Capital Region Transport Corporation).

NCRTC is the agency responsible for the implementation of RRTS(Regional Rapid Transit system) project in Delhi-NCR.

The RRTS is a one of a kind project for India and its regional corridors.

It aims to provide a fast, convenient and pollution-free transport system, which would connect Delhi with its regional territories of the NCR(National Capital Region).

The pre-construction activities are already initiated by the NCRTC.

Here are the facts that you need to know about the upcoming Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Corridor:

  1. Once its services begin the Delhi-Meerut rapid corridor will connect Delhi to Uttar Pradesh, passing through one of the most densely populated areas of the NCR.

2. A total of 22 RRTS stations are  considered to be  there on both the elevated and underground sections.

3. The expected travel time, as per NCRTC is going to be 55 minutes, for the journey.

4. The RRTS trains will be available at a frequency of 5-10 minutes and its going to be operational at an average speed of 100 Km/ph. The operational speed of the trains would be 160 Km/ph.

5. The RRTS trains is considered to be equipped with CCTV surveillance, charging ports for mobile/laptop and luggage space.

6. One coach will be a ‘business class’ , out of the total 9 coaches in the RRTS trains. The passengers will have to pay a bit of extra for the ‘business class’ travel.

7. The ‘business class’ is considered to have an overhead cabin for luggage, Wi-Fi connection, refreshments and luxury seats for a comfortable journey.

8. Separate Entry and Exit gates are likely to be installed for the ‘business class’ coach, also with the facility of AFC(Automatic Fare Collection) system using QR code based tickets and NFC(Near Field Communication) enabled phones.

9. The AFC(Automatic Fare Collection) will be equipped on the platforms which would provide direct access to the ‘executive’ lounge areas on platforms.

9.The RRTS trains and stations would be universally accessible as priority seating arrangements for differently-abled, a ladies coach and a ‘business class’ coach, would be there in every train.

10. The RRTS is considered to reduce pollution and road congestion. It connects one city centre to another. It is estimated that it would take more than one-lakh private vehicles off-road.

11. The Delhi- Ghaziabad- Meerut RRTS corridor is the first amongst the proposed three rapid rail corridors planned to be implemented in the first phase of the project.

12. The other two proposed corridors are Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar and Delhi- Sonipat-Panipat.
