President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday dissolved the 16th Lok Sabha with immediate effect on the recommendation of the Union cabinet, President Office said in an official statement. “The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet on 24.05.2019 and signed the Order dissolving the 16th Lok Sabha,” it said.

A communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said the President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the order of dissolving the 16th Lok Sabha on the advice of Union Cabinet.

The Union Cabinet Meeting that was Chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday evening met and adopted a resolution for the dissolution of 16th Lok Sabha. PM Narendra Modi, who chaired Union Cabinet meeting, met the President Ram Nath Kovind later to give the resolution to cement up the formation of the 17th Lok Sabha and the dissolution of current Lok Sabha.

The president had on Friday accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers. However, asked them to continue as a Caretaker until the new government is not formed.

The Bharatiya Janata Party in the recently held national polls has secured 303 seats, and along with its allies, the NDA took it’s tally up to 352 seats. In 2014 national polls, BJP had won 281 Lok Sabha Seats.

The Congress won 52 seats in the recently held polls, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. However, it has lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.
