Protests have erupted in the national capital as the newly elected president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa is in India on a two-day visit. He will hold meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders to strengthen bilateral ties.

MDMK leader Vaiko and other workers of the party staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the newly elected Sri Lankan President; followed by which, they have been detained by the police.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa stormed to victory in Sri Lanka’s presidential elections. He is known as Sri Lanka’s controversial former Defence chief who played a leading role in ruthlessly ending nearly 30-year civil war with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
