In his first conference after assuming office as the Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh on Tuesday expressed his concern over the distress the farmers are facing regarding the farm loan waiver.

He consoles the farmers saying that they need not worry about the loans, the government will waive off all the loans and it will be between the government and the banks, the farmers can be tension free now. Providing data Amarinder said that 7000 cases of farmer suicides were reported and alone 6000 were during the rule of the previous government. He said that the present government was committed to do anything to end the distress of the farmers and totally eradicate the idea of a farmer committing suicide.

As per the data currently the loans of the farmers is around Rs 59,620 crore in over 20 lakh loan accounts and according to the CM the government has made a provision for Rs 15 crore in the current budget. The CM also said that the government will even bear the loans of the 7000 farmers who committed suicide.

In spite of just being a small state with having only 1.54 percent of the area of the country, Punjab contributed almost 50 % of food grains, wheat and paddy to the national granaries.
