Congress chief Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the Narendra Modi government for the Union Budget made on February 1. Members of the Congress party took a jibe on the ground of promises BJP made in 2014 elections. Manish Tiwari termed it a “lip service” to the concerns of farmers. A major section of the society is seeing the Union budget as focused on the farmers and rural community. It has been hailed by various sections to be a pro-poor budget that would eventually transform lives.

Chidambaram striking hard

Also joining the criticism bandwagon was senior Congress leader P Chidambaram. He strongly disapproved of the budget to help as a pro-farmer measure. He said that there was nothing that would immediately increase the real income of the farmers immediately”. According to him the provision of Rs 5 lacs under health expense was a big jumla. The fiscal loopholes were also pointed out by the former finance minister from the Manmohan Singh cabinet. Mr Chidambaram expressed his gratefulness to God that it was the last budget by NDA government.

Mr Chidambaram further added,

“I also don’t see how they will double farm income by 2022 when it has remained stagnant for four years… Maybe the ministers are focusing on agriculture the budget is not.”

Rahul left early without commenting on the budget. Meanwhile, Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a tweet expressed gratefulness as it was the last Budget by the BJP-led government. He also slammed the NDA for unfulfilled promises, fancy schemes and unemployment.

Victory in Rajasthan by-polls

Congress gained a huge shot by coming out victorious in the three by-elections in Rajasthan.  It is the same Congress party which didn’t even had a single seat in the last assembly elections. This election result comes as hay in the sunshine in Rajasthan where Congress hopes to take power from the Vasundhara Raje government in the upcoming assembly polls. The Congress chief had recently expressed confidence about the assembly elections in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan.

He had said, “The BJP-ruled states are on the back foot.” “We are going to have elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan… We are confident we will win.”
