Congress Party on Thursday asserted that Rahul Gandhi will continue to be the party president of the Grand old party even after Gandhi, now an MP from Wayanad is said to be unmoved over his decision of stepping down from the party’s top post after crushing defeat in the national polls.

Speaking to the media party’s spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that Rahul Gandhi will continue to lead us, reported ANI. He said, ‘He was, he is and he will Congress President’.

While Congress Leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi clearing the air over the resignation of Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said he doesn’t want to comment further on this but you can see this as the endorsement what Randeep Surjewala said on Wednesday’.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Core group of Congress led by Senior AK Antony met informally to take stock of the political situation. Reportedly, The Congress party is in dilemma as to who will take over and lead the party, sources said.

Gandhi had offered to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held on May 25 after poll results. Reportedly despite the CWC rejected his resignation, now an MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi is said to be unfazed.

The Congress had held its Working Committee meeting to discuss the reasons responsible for its poor performance in the recently held national polls 2019. Rahul Gandhi taking moral responsibility of defeat had on Saturday offered his resignation and asked party leaders to get a new name for party president post.

The Congress faced a crushing defeat in national polls and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. It has also lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.

In a bigger embarrassment to Congress, BJP Leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani in the recently held national polls turn out to be number 1 giant killer by defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Gandhi family’s bastion in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. Irani defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi with a margin of over 55,000 votes.
