Congress president Rahul Gandhi escalated the issue of Andhra Pradesh’s demands by promising special status to the state in case people of India will vote his party to power during next year’s general elections.

Addressing a gathering of party workers protesting over the issue at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar area along with leaders of YSR Congress and Telugu Desam Party, Gandhi said, “We will give special category status to Andhra Pradesh. It’s the first thing we will do after coming to power in 2019.”

Later in the day, the Congress president put up a tweet showing a clipping of his speech and reiterated the need of opposition parties to unite on the issue and “force the BJP govt to do justice to the people of Andhra.”

Rahul Gandhi was joined there by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Somnath Bharti, who claimed that he attended the protest on behalf of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Bharti said his party will support Congress both inside and outside the Parliament over the issue of Andhra Pradesh’s special status demands.
