Congress national president Rahul Gandhi yesterday expressed support for granting of special status to the state of Andhra Pradesh and for speedy completion of Polavaram project. He called upon all political parties to “unite on this issue and support this call for justice.”

Gandhi’s tweet came on a day when MPs belonging to his party, along with Telugu Desam Party and YSR Congress, had led loud protests against the government in both Houses of the Parliament for not fulfilling promises made towards Andhra Pradesh.

TDP leaders had expressed grave disappointment following Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s budget speech earlier this month as the government had not made any references to granting of special status to Andhra Pradesh. They had held a meeting with party chief and Andhra chief minister Chandrababu Naidu to reassess their continuation with BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Although they decided to continue their alliance, they did not stop letting their disappointment known. Their MPs had been protesting inside and outside Parliament throughout the ongoing budget session. Even members of Congress and YSR Congress had raised this issue extensively.

Various regional and national parties have been seeking implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, through which the state was split into two and Telangana was born. They have been demanding special funding for various important infrastructure projects in the state.
