Congress president Rahul Gandhi is slated to return to Chhattisgarh and would visit its Bastar district Saturday to take part in `Adivasi Krishak Adhikar Sammelan’ (convention for tribal farmers’ rights). During the programme at Dhuragaon village, Congress President will distribute land documents to farmers who have been returned their lands acquired in 2008 for a Tata Steel project, an Official said.

He will also distribute Forest Rights Certificates and farm loan waiver certificates. Gandhi will also dedicate projects worth 21.75 crores in Bastar division.

Fulfilling its poll promise, the Congress government in Chhattisgarh has been returning to farmers the land acquired for Tata Steel project which remained unused after the project was scrapped. Congress in its Manifesto for state Polls in December has made big promises addressing farmer distress including Farm Loan Waiver.

Total of 1,764.61 hectares of land of 1,707 farmers from ten villages had been acquired by the government in 2008.

Agrarian Crisis and Farmer Distress were among major issues in the Hindi Heartland States where the assembly elections 2018 have been recently concluded. Congress has added the issue of Farm Loan waiver in all three states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The Congress Campaign in these polls has been revolved around agrarian crisis largely.

Earlier on January 28, Rahul Gandhi made a big pre-poll promise and pitch for ‘Minimum Income Guarantee’ for every poor if Congress voted to power in Lok Sabha Polls 2019. While addressing a rally, Kisaan Abhaar Sammelan’ made the remarks.

He said, ‘The Congress has decided to take a historic decision. The Congress-led government is going to give a minimum income guarantee. This means each poor person in India will have a minimum income. This means there will be no hungry, poor people in India’

The Congress had posted a massive victory in last year’s state Assembly polls, winning 68 of the total 90 seats, while Bhartiya Janta Party was reduced to 15 seats. Ahead of the Assembly polls, Gandhi had assured to waive farm loans if his party was voted to power in the state.
