Senior IAS officer Rajiv Gauba on Thursday assumed office as the new Union Home Secretary after Rajiv Mehrishi retired from the post. Gauba was appointed as the home secretary about two months ago and has been serving the post since that as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Rajiv Gauba was born in Punjab in 1958 and graduated in Physics from Patna University. Prior to being appointed as the Union Home Secretary, he was serving in the home ministry as additional secretary, taking care of the crucial left wing extremism division along with many other responsibilities. He has held many important posts in the past and had vast experience in serving at the senior positions.

Before joining the Central government last year, Gauba had served as the Chief Secretary in Jharkhand for 15 months. He has represented India on the board of International Monetary Fund for four years and has also held an important position in the government’s Central ministries of home, defence, finance and environment and forests.

He will have a fixed tenure of 2 years as the Union Home Secretary and during his service, he will look after crucial issues like internal security, militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, Maoist problems in the central and east India.
