After serving as the Vice-President and chairing the Rajya Sabha for 10 years Hamid Ansari retires from the office on Thursday.
Members of Rajya Sabha including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Arun Jaitley, Sitaram Yechury bid farewell to Ansari during the proceedings of the House. Modi thanked Ansari for contributing his distinguished years in public Service. He further added “I’m sure you may have experienced some unease on your disability to react as a politician on several matters. After the end of your tenure, you are free such obligations.”

The leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said it is an emotional moment to bid farewell to Mr. Chairman. The leader of CPI Sitram Yetuchury said that Ansari was the best umpire the House could have. He also thanked Ansari for observing strictly a very important rule by not allowing a legislation to be passed when the House was not in order. “I hope that this precedent is continued to be observed by those who follow you into the Chair,” he added.
Manmohan Singh thanked him for being a friend philosopher and guide. PJ Kurien said that it was a privilege to work as the Deputy Chairman under Ansari.
