The revised Triple Talaq Bill that was passed in Lok Sabha on Thursday after almost 5 hours long discussion will go on for its test in Rajya Sabha on December 31st, Monday. BJP who managed to pass the bill in Lok Sabha will face resistance in the upper House of the Parliament as the Saffron Outfit does not have a majority there.

On December 27, After a long day of relentless debate, the Lok Sabha finally passed the Triple Talaq bill amid opposition uproar. While 245 voters were in favor of the bill, 11 voted against it. It may be noted that the Congress and AIADMK walked out from the Parliament as their demands to get it referred to a select committee was rejected.

Several leaders from opposition parties called for a select joint committee to conduct deeper scrutiny of the bill.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will move the Muslim Women Bill (Triple Talaq) 2018 in Rajya Sabha on December 31st. The Bill sought to protect the rights of married Muslim women & to prohibit divorce by pronouncing talaq by their husbands.

While it would not be an easy task for the BJP government as the opposition parties have signed a resolution to refer the bill to a joint select committee.

The development comes after the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha amid opposition uproar, with 245 votes in its favor and 11 against it.

AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said the Congress party will not let the passage of the triple talaq bill in its present form in the Rajya Sabha. The party would join hands with those parties with which it can ally with to defeat the bill in the present form, he told reporters here.

Political Parties like Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Trinamool Congress are expected to invoke Rule 125 of Rajya Sabha rules and procedures, which allows members to pass a resolution to refer the bill to a select committee.

While the BJP led Centre government does not want to refer the bill to a select committee as it has already been delayed significantly.

The Apex Court had in August 2017 banned the instant divorce, calling the practice “unconstitutional”.
