On Tuesday, the Parliament passed the Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill, along with the minor amendments suggested by the Rajya Sabha.

The bill was amended to change the bylaws determining the compensation payable for acquisition of immovable property by the Central government for security and defense purposes, reported Financial Express.

The Bill was passed with some amendments in the Rajya Sabha on July 18 and sent back to the Lok Sabha for approval. One minor amendment included changing the year of the Bill; it has been passed by the Lower House on Tuesday.

The amendments made in the Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill, was to grant permission to the Centre to “reissue the notice of acquisition to ensure that the property owner is heard”, reported Financial Times.

In the cases where notice has been reissued, the property owner will be entitled to receive an interest on the compensation payable.

The compensation will be enhanced in cases when the government reissues the acquisition notice to use the property for security and defence purposes.

Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs piloted the Bill in the Parliament. The Bill was passed via voice vote without any debate.
