As the issue of the illegal immigrants trespassing in India in search of shelter is increasing day by day, all the political parties are giving their views to solve the problem.

Regarding the same, BSP Chief Mayawati in a statement on Tuesday said that India should adopt a humanitarian approach in solving the issue of the Rohingya Muslims who are migrating to India in search of safety and shelter. She also said that the Modi government should hold talks with the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the problems of the illegal immigrants.

These remarks of the BSP Chief come in connection to the statements made by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Sep 5. He had said that all the Rohingyas coming into India after being thrown out from Myanmar are illegal immigrants and will be soon deported back.

Regarding this Mayawati said that since the decision of the Modi government is still not clear, it is creating a situation of unrest and dilemma amongst the immigrants. “In the bordering state of Myanmar, owing to unrest, lakhs of Rohingya Muslims have taken refuge in Bangladesh, and in some states of India. Since the approach of the Modi government is not clear, there is a situation of a dilemma,” Mayawati said.

Pointing out the tradition followed by India she said that, “The Government of India must adopt a humane view as has been the tradition of India. The government should also hold talks with governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the problems of Rohingya Muslims so that their exodus from their country is stopped.” India has been always giving shelter to anyone coming from across the world and this time too India should follow its old tradition she added.

According to the estimates of the UN, around 40,000 Rohingya Muslims are settled in India and out of them around 16,000 have the proper refugee documentation with them.
