Following the recent incident of eve-teasing and molestation of a student of the first year at the Banaras Hindu University, few changes were made to ensure the security and safety of the girls.

On 21 Sep at around 6 pm a BHU student was molested by three boys riding a bike and this incident led to a massive protest by both the girls and boys of BHU. The negligence of the administration to take any action against the boys and denial of the Vice Chancellor to address the issue triggered the protest and it turned violent.

Looking at the seriousness of the matter, former Proctor ON Singh resigned from the post and in the 101-year-old history of BHU for the first time a woman was appointed as the new Proctor.

Royona Singh born in Europe and brought up for 9 years in France was appointed the new Proctor of Banaras Hindu University on Thursday, 28 Sep. She is named after a French town called Royan. Born and brought up outside India, Royana has a different perspective towards the ways girls should be treated and what rules should or should not be imposed on them.

BHU’s new chief proctor is also a professor of anatomy at the university’s Institute of Medical Sciences.
