The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat in an interview claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was a ‘kattar’ (hardcore) Hindu.  The same was explained by him in Meerut where people had gathered for the Rashtrodaya Samagam. He had said,

“If Hindus become more kattar (fundamentalists), it actually means they will be more liberal. In that sense, Mahatma Gandhi was a ‘kattar’ (hardcore) Hindu.”

Gandhi had decllared himself a ‘fanatic Sanatani Hindu’ in his writings. He had made the mentioned reference from Gandhi’s writings in Harijan.

Bhagwat on Hindutva and Hinduism

He was also asked about the portrayal of Hindu religion in different narratives. When asked if one narrative is Hinduism and the other is Hindutva–Bhagwat said that to RSS Hindutva is the one and only narrative.

Bhagwat also emphasised the belief of RSS in truth and non-violence as core values of Hindutva. He also added,

“If somebody is attacking or indirectly killing the truth and non-violence we believe in, then to protect those values we will have to fight. To fight and practise truth and non-violence is Hindutva.”

He also said that attraction towards Hindutva is growing, and maybe that was the reason confusion and distortion was created about it.
