External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar and Jugalji Mathurji Thakor on Monday filed their nomination for Rajya Sabha, as BJP candidates, at Gujarat legislative assembly. Both Jaishankar and Mathurji Thakor was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani when they filed their nomination for the Upper House of the Parliament.

External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar formally joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday in presence of Working President JP Nadda at Parliament House. He has been inducted in Narendra Modi‘s 2.0 cabinet as an External Finance Minister.

His election to Rajya Sabha is necessitated as he did not contest the national polls. S Jaishankar will be now a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.

He has replaced BJP Stalwart Sushma Swaraj in Foreign Affairs Ministry as the latter opted out of the poll race citing her health issues. His induction in the Modi 2.0 cabinet has been praised by many experts saying that this will inspire confidence and further strengthen the US-India strategic ties.

Bharatiya Janata Party had on Monday announced the name of both -Jaishankar and Mathurji Thakor – as its nominee for Rajya Sabha by-polls slated for July 5.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s second nominee Jugalji Thakor (Lokhandwala) is OBC youth leader from North  Gujarat’s Mehsana. Thakor’s name for the seat in the Upper House of the Parliament came as a surprise to many.

A 49-year-old Leader who is also the secretary Party’s OBC Cell. He is credited with playing an important role in strengthening the party among OBC communities in North Gujarat.

The By-polls in two Rajya Sabha Seats of the State was necessitated after sitting MPs – BJP Chief Amit Shah and BJP Leader Smriti Irani – resigned from the Upper House after they were elected to 17th Lok Sabha. BJP President Amit Shah who was in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat has been elected as MP from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha Seat with a heavy margin of over 5 Lakh votes.

While Union Minister Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi from his family’s bastion of Amethi to enter the 17th Lok Sabha.
