VK Sasikala

Deputy inspector of prison (DIG) Roopa Moudgil submitted a report to the government saying that AIADMK General Secretary and convict VK Sasikala Natarajan, her sister-in-law, Elavarasi and nephew VK Sudhakaran were getting the royal treatment in the women’s cell.

Sasikala along with her sister-in-law and nephew were held guilty by a trial court in September 2014, they were sentenced to an imprisonment of 4 years by the Supreme Court on February 14 in the two-decade-old disproportionate assets case of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Roopa Moudgil is the first woman in the southern state who has been recently appointed on 23 June as the DIG of the prisons department. Just after three weeks of her joining, she said that there are massive irregularities and rampant corruption is prevailing in the jails. She has alleged that the prisoners are supplied drugs through illegal means, 18 out of 25 criminal’s drug test reports were positive.

She also accused Sasikala of bribing the Karnataka Director General of Prisons (DGP) Satyanarayana Rao and city central jail officials for undue favors. She said that Sasikala had given Rs 1 crore to Rao and another Rs 1 crore was distributed among officials, including warden of the central jail. She further added that Sasikala gets special menu daily, cooked by special chefs in a special kitchen near the women’s cell.

Denying to these allegations Rao said that he has asked Roopa to serve a memo giving explanations and evidence to prove her wild allegations. He said that she had not given any report to him or the government yet.
