Kolkata, May 8  Veteran Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor, known for his villainous and comic roles, on Wednesday campaigned for Trinamool Congress candidate Madan Mitra for the by-polls to West Bengal’s Bhatpara Assembly seat.

Kapoor participated in a Trinamool Congress roadshow in the area, traveling in an open jeep accompanied by popular Bhojpuri singer Rani Chatterjee.

“If you want your future to be in safe hands, press button number three in the EVM. Do not forget. Press button number three” he said as Mitra’s name would be listed on number three on the EVM.

He also recited some of his popular dialogues to entertain the people.

Trinamool activists and leaders in the roadshow looked upbeat.

“See Shakti Kapoor has come to you. All of you vote for Madan da,” a Trinamool leader appealed.

The seat has fallen vacant after the sitting Trinamool Congress MLA Arjun Singh defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party and subsequently resigned. He is now contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 polls.

The TMC’s move to name Madan Mitra from Islampur Assembly Seat is seen as an attempt to rehabilitate him who is an accused Saradha Scam.

The Poll Body had on April 20 declared the dates for by-polls in 5 assembly seats of West Bengal. As per the election commission, the assembly seats of – Islampur, Kandi, Nowda, Habibpur and Bhatpara – will go to polls on May 19. The last date to file nomination for the by-polls is May 1.

Counting of votes will be held on 23rd of May along with the counting for national elections 2019.

While the National Elections have already started and would spread across all seven phases from April 11 to May 19.

Polling in West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha Seat is being spread on all seven phases. 17 Lok Sabha seats of the state will go to polls in remaining two phases.
