The Municipal Corporation elections were held in Shimla on Friday, 16 June. Of the total population of Shimla, appoximately 91000 are in the category of being electors. From these 91000 electors, 58% participated in the election and caste votes.

Tibetans in exile also actively took part in the election by voting. Congress had been ruling the Shimla civic body for 26 years till the last elections in 2012, where CPM won the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts as also election for one councillor’s seat.

The main contest is between the ruling Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP has supported 34 candidates, the Congress 27 and the CPM 22 candidates. The Communists are supporting six independents. Though the candidates did not contest on party symbols.

As per the results announced on 17 June, Candidates supported by the BJP are leading in the 34-member house of the Shimla Municipal Corporation by winning six of the 13 declared seats. The Congress-supported candidates won four seats.  Two seats are won by independents, while one by the CPM.
