Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi from Congress Stronghold Amethi, received the longest applause when she took oath as a member of the 17th Lok Sabha on Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Other union ministers and MPs were seen thumping the desk for a long time as soon as Irani took as a member of the House as Amethi Member of Parliament.

Smriti Irani who took oath in Hindi greeted pro-tem Speaker Dr. Virendra Kumar. BJP MP Dr.Virendra Kumar was administrated oath as Protem Speaker by President Ram Nath Kovind. She also greeted opposition leaders, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who reciprocated the greetings with a ‘namaste’ gesture.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi was not present in the Lok Sabha at that time.
In a big embarrassment to Congress in the recently held national polls, BJP Leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani in the recently held national polls turn out to be number 1 giant killer by defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Gandhi family’s bastion in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. Irani defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi with a margin of over 55,000 votes.
Rahul Gandhi has entered the Lok Sabha for the First time in 2004 contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha Seat. Amethi in the past has been represented by Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sanjay Gandhi. Barring 1977, and 1998, Amethi before 2019 has always elected a Congress Nominee.
While earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Harsimrat Kaur Badal among others were administrated oath.
The swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected MPs will be spread over two days. Election to elect a new Speaker of the House will be held on 19th June.
