Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his help in getting the Women’s reservation bill passed.

Sonia Gandhi taking the advantage of the majority of BJP seats in the Lok Sabha wrote a letter to Narendra Modi urging him to get the bill passes in the Lower House. She also assured Congress’s support terming it as a major step taken for the empowerment of the Women.

She said that her party will extend its full support to the legislation as it will be a significant step in the direction of promoting the women empowerment.

The women reservation bill on which Sonia is seeking the help of Narendra Modi to get it passes in the Lok Sabha has already been approved and passed by the Rajya Sabha on 9 March 2010. In her letter, the Congress leader also reminded Modi that her party and its late leader Rajiv Gandhi had first suggested the provision of reservation for women in panchayats and municipal bodies through Constitutional amendment bills.

She said that the bill proposed by Rajiv Gandhi was though rejected by the opposition back in 1989, but later both the hoses of the parliament had passed the bill in 1993.

Her letter to the Prime Minister dated 20 Sep read:

“I am writing to request you to take advantage of your majority in the Lok Sabha to now get the women’s reservation bill passed in the Lower House as well.”
