Akhilesh and Mayawati

Minutes after BSP Supremo Mayawati snapped ties with Samajwadi Party, its Leader Akhilesh Yadav announced that his party, Samajwadi Party, will also go ‘solo’ in the coming by-polls to 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking to media, Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that he will think what has been said about the alliance and if the alliance is broken, Samajwadi Party will contest on all 11 seats on its own, he said minutes after Mayawati announced to snapped ties and to contest by-polls solo in Uttar Pradesh.

Reacting on the query about whether he expected such, Yadav replied saying that it is very difficult to say, but if BSP has taken a call, we welcome the move and extend wishes to party workers.

Earlier in the day, addressing a presser in State’s Capital Lucknow, BSP Supremo Mayawati announced that her party will contest the by-polls on its own in Uttar Pradesh, BSP Supremo added that this should be seen as a permanent break-away of the BSP-SP Alliance.

Mayawati, as quoted by ANI, said, ‘It’s not a permanent break. If we feel in future that SP Chief succeeds in his political work, we’ll again work together. But if he doesn’t succeed, it’ll be good for us to work separately. So we’ve decided to fight the by-elections alone’.

By-polls are slated for at least 11 assembly seats in the state. The by-polls in these 11 seats necessitated after MLAs – 9 from BJP and one each from SP-BSP – resigned to contest the Lok Sabha Polls.

The quick turn of events in the state comes a day after BSP held a review meeting in the national capital to deliberate upon the reasons behind the party’s poll disaster in the national polls.

Reportedly, in a party meeting on Monday, BSP Supremo asked all MLAs and Ministers not to depend on Coalition to seek votes. Mayawati reportedly said that the party believes that the coalition with Samajwadi Party did not work for it in the recently held polls.

It should be noted that BSP-SP Alliance faced a crushing defeat in the state in the recently held national polls. In Uttar Pradesh, BJP bagged 62 seats and with its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) it took its tally to 64 seats out of the 80 Lok Sabha Seat. While Mahagathbandhan bagged 15 seats – BSP 10 and SP 5 – while Congress only managed to retain its bastion Rae Bareli.
