Supreme Court of India

In continuation with the interesting events in Goa, Supreme Court heard the plea of Congress seeking invention in BJP’s government formation in Goa. Supreme Court however, did not come out with a substantial verdict and asked the BJP government to prove its numbers in the assembly by ordering a floor test on Thursday.

On Monday, congress had submitted a plea in the Supreme Court, terming BJP’s move as unconstitutional and added that Congress should have given the chance to form government as it emerged to be the single largest party in the state.

The verdict was given by a special bench of Supreme Court headed by chief justice J S Khehar. In the statement, it said if congress had enough numbers to form government, it would have gone to the governor and not to Supreme Court. It further added that BJP is claiming to form government on basis of support it ha received from the regional parties. Along with that, the court has asked the governor of Goa, Mridula Sinha to conduct a floor test in assembly on Thursday, March 16th.

Congress emerged as the largest party in Goa with 17 seats. BJP was a close second with 13. However, BJP has got the support of Goa Forward Party and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, which have 3 MLAs each as well as 2 independent MLAs, taking the total number to 21, which is needed to form government in the state.

Former Union Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar is set to be sworn in as the chief minister of the state. The oath taking ceremony will take place later today. Interestingly, Congress leaders in the state have also asked for time to meet the governor to claim their stake to form the government.
