Supreme Court expressed its indignation towards the neglected garbage situation of Delhi and condemned the Lieutenant Governor for the same.

Delhi LG Anil Baijal was criticized for his inaction regarding clearance of the “mountains of garbage” dumped in Delhi. However, LG blamed the municipal corporation for not working on the garbage issue.  Supreme Court chided the LG reminding him that he has power over the municipal corporations.

Due to the garbage heap in Delhi, people have been suffering from diseases like malaria, dengue etc. In 2015, a seven-year-old boy died due to dengue and his family committed suicide later, alleging denial of treatment to their kid by five private hospitals as the cause of his death. These hearings are in respect to that case.

LG is responsible for taking decisions related to land.  Supreme Court slammed the LG saying, “You say I have the power, but you do not want to do anything. You think you are superpower; I am responsible but nobody can question,” as reported by The Hindustan Times.

The three garbage sites in Delhi – Gazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa have “mountains of garbage” and no one is ready to take the blame for the sordid situation.

Referring to the future dark reality of the issue of solid waste management at the Ghazipur landfill site in Delhi, SC opined that it “will match the height of iconic 73-metre high Qutub Minar and red beacon lights will have to be used to ward off aircraft flying over it.”
