Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj is on a week-long trip to the United States to attend the Annual UN General Assembly. She reached the US on Monday and will be addressing the UN session on 32 Sep.

During her stay, on the sidelines of the UN assembly session, the Indian minister held bilateral meetings with leaders of many nations. She also met Ivanka Trump, daughter of the US President Donald Trump and both the women discussed on ways to enhance women empowerment. She had also met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Shiekh Hasina, though the issue of the Rohingyas was not brought up.

Swaraj on Wednesday met with the Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani at his hotel. During the meeting both the leaders held a discussion on ways to boost the strategic partnership between the two nations.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted “Boosting strategic partnership with a special friend, EAM @SushmaSwaraj calls on Afghanistan President @ashrafghani.”

Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani had visited Deli earlier this month.
During the meeting between Swaraj and Rabbani, both the nations agreed to undertake 116 projects in Afghanistan to promote and further develop the partnership between India and Afghanistan. The Afghan Foreign Minister had also requested that India should speed up the construction of the Chhabahar port in Iran so that Afghanistan can finally have an outlet and be connected to the rest of the world.
The Afghan leader also asked the expansion of the air corridor signed between India and Afghanistan. Rabbani had visited India, after US President Narendra Modi had requested India to help the US more regarding the issues in Afghanistan.
