On Friday, Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman with the Param Vir Chakra, the country’s highest military honour.

Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami, in a letter to PM Modi said Abhinandan is a native of Tamil Nadu, demonstrated amazing poise and confidence in the face of an adverse condition and it would be proper if he is awarded the highest military honour for his gallantry.

However, Tamil Nadu CM also noted that Wing Commander Abhinandan was released by Pakistan because of the diplomatic measures of the Prime Minister and because of extensive international pressure on Pakistan.

The Tamil Nadu CM said, “Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse conditions, which has won him many hearts across the country. It is appropriate that he be awarded India’s highest military honour Param Vir Chakra (PVC) for displaying most inimitable gallantry and valour.”

Chief Minister K Palaniswami, also recalled that the MiG-21 Bison aircraft piloted by Wing Commander Abhinandan took down a F-16 of the PAF when it tried to infiltrate in India’s air space and as a result of the engagement he was later apprehended by Pakistani military

Wing Commander Abhinandan was captured on 27 February. He was returned back to Indian on 1 March after Pakistan Prime Minster Imran Khan announced that the IAF Wing Commander would be released as a peace gesture.

According to the central government, Param Vir Chakra “is conferred for most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of gallantry or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air.”
