EC on Monday clarified that the mere possession of Elector’s Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) are not enough for a person to be eligible to vote. It however mentioned that the voter’s name being mentioned in the electoral list is mandatory.

Stating that the name of a person being featured in the electoral roll is as much necessary as having the voter ID card, Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Satyabrata Sahoo mentioned that “This slip will not be accepted for the purpose of identification in polling station. You are required to carry EPIC or one of the 11 alternative documents specified by the Commission for voting.”

He also mentioned how they could produce passport, driving license, service identity cards with photographs as Identity proofs. He also said that the Model Code of Conduct will remain in Tamil Nadu till May 27th as re-polling is to be held in 13 polling stations in Tamil Nadu with the seventh phase of general elections on May 19th.

“The Model Code of Conduct came into effect with the announcement of elections by the Election Commission on March 10. Even though polling in 38 Lok Sabha constituencies and 18 assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu were completed on April 18th by-elections to four assembly constituencies are to be held on May 19,” said Sahoo to TOI.
