HYDERABAD: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has opposed the bill seeking to criminalise instant triple talaq, saying this would have severe consequences on rule of law and social cohesion in the country.

In a letter to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, he raised concern over the attempt to table the bill in Parliament without consultation.

Member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi has written to Union Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad, on his oppositions to the move to criminalise triple talaq on Friday.
Owaisi raised concerns after the bill to criminalise triple talaq was cleared by Union Cabinet.

He demanded that the government should clarify, at the outset, as to how the law seeks to enforce imprisonment and provisions of maintenance in tandem.

“It is regrettable that a constitutional value as important as gender justice is being used to merely further cynical political goals.” he wrote.

The Hyderabad MP described it as an attempt to demonise the Muslim community in the garb of “saving” and “protecting” Muslim women.

Asaduddin said that it was absurd that a special law was being considered to do away with triple talaq, when existing legislation could sufficiently provide appropriate remedies to Muslim women who were at the receiving end of triple talaq.

Owaisi also raised concerns that the law could open up another avenue for discriminatory detention and arrest of Muslims.
