Tripura Congress faces heavy-loss; Nine more leaders quit party to follow steps of Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman

After the resignation of Tripura Congress President Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman, nine more leaders of the party submitted their papers to quit on Wednesday. TPCC General Secretary Sridam Debbarman and Vice-president of the state unit are among the leaders who have offered to resign.

Speaking on the resignation of nine leaders, TPCC General Secretary Sridam Debbarman said that the “royal scion has fallen victim to a conspiracy.” He further added “Maharaja Pradyot was forced to resign from the party as he sought the implementation of NRC exercise and refused to compromise with a section of corrupt leaders.

Vice-president Sachindra Debbarman and Dinesh Debbarman (general secretary) are also among the leaders who have tendered their will to quit from the party following the steps of Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman.

TPCC general secretary Sridam also said that it was because of Maharaja Kirit only, that Congress could secure 30 percent votes in the region during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Resignation of Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman

Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman submitted his resignation on Monday as he has been disappointed with the party’s functioning and increasing intra-party politics. He has accused the Congress party of accommodating corrupt and criminal people within its fold. Previous week, he also gave up his membership.

The leader has been at the loggerhead with the party since he had appealed in the Supreme Court for coming out with an “NRC-like list” in Tripura. After that, he complained of pressure from senior leaders to withdraw his petition. The leader is also reported to have strained relations with the party’s general secretary and northeast in-charge Luizinho Faleiro.

TIW’s Take-

Back-to-back resignations from the Congress party will definitely prove disastrous for the grand old party. The party had already suffered an embarrassing defeat in the last Lok Sabha elections. And this new wind of senior leaders quitting the party might aggravate their problems.
