Uttar Pradesh Congress Working Committee (CWC) called a meeting on Thursday to discuss the reasons behind party’s poor performance in the state that sends 80 Parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha. Congress in the recently held national polls could only manage to win a single seat, its last bastion in the state – Rae Bareli.

Congress State Chief Raj Babbar who reportedly offered to resign after poll disaster in a letter to Congress Working Committee Workers said that meeting is called to discuss where the party went wrong in the state.

In a letter, Babbar stated, ‘As you know, the responsibility of the loss in the polls in shared by all workers. A meeting of all the office bearers and the members of CWC to discuss all these issues have been called, You Presence in required, Raj Babbar said in a letter.

He also added that Congress President Rahul Gandhi has offered to resign from party top post after adverse poll results.

Gandhi had offered to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held on Saturday. Reportedly despite the CWC rejected his resignation, now an MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi is said to be unfazed.Many Senior Leaders have tried to convince him and requested him not to tender resignation.

It should be noted that Raj Babbar along with many State President till now has offered to resign from their posts taking responsibility of the poll debacle. Raj Babbar who himself contested from Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha Seat witness a crushing defeat and lost to BJP’s Rajkumar Chahar with over 4.95 Lakh votes.

Raj Babbar had on may 23 tweeted, ‘Congratulations to the winners for securing the confidence of the public. The results for up Congress are disappointing. I find myself guilty of not being able to play your responsibility in a successful manner’.

The Congress faced a crushing defeat in national polls and won 52 seats, which is only 8 more than it got in 2014 national polls. It has also lost some of its strongholds across the country including Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s Guna in Madhya Pradesh.

It had only managed to won a single seat – Sonia Gandhi‘s Rae Bareli – out of the 80 Lok Sabha Seats of the state. It had got 6.3% vote share from Uttar Pradesh.
