The government in Uttar Pradesh, led by Samajwadi Party on Tuesday announced that it had implemented the recommendations of Seventh Pay Commission. The move came after the committee formed to suggest changes in pay scale, formed under former bureaucrat GB Pattnaik, submitted its report on December 7th.

The announcement is set to benefit 24 lakh employees and pensioners under the UP government. After the implementations, the lowest salary of a government employee will be INR 18,000 whereas the highest salary will be INR 2.25 Lakh.

The announcement comes right before the UP assembly polls, which are set to take place in under two months. Akhilesh Yadav, the CM of Uttar Pradesh, was however confident of his electoral success and stated that Samajwadi Party will surely secure the mandate required to form government. He also added that if an alliance takes place, it will easily secure over 300 seats, supporting the ongoing rumors that Samajwadi Party might form an alliance with Congress.

The announcement will increase the average salary of UP government employees by around 20 percent and it will reduce the difference between the payscale of central government employees and state employees. According to statistics, UP government spends an average of INR 95,000 Crores annually on salaries and other incentives of state government employees. Implementation of Seventh Pay Commission will incur an additional burden of INR 26,573 crores in the first year and INR 22,778 Crores in the following years.
