West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi today. The meeting between the two leaders took place at North Block Office in the national capital.

It has been reported that Mamata Banerjee raised the issue of NRC (National Register of Citizens) in the meeting. She expressed her concerns regarding the genuine people who have been excluded from the final list of NRC. She urged the Home Minister to look into the matter and sort out the worries of people. She said that the excluded population carry a huge number of Hindi-speaking and Bengali-speaking people. Many Assamese and Gorkhas have also been left out of the list.

Mamata Banerjee has also told Amit Shah that NRC is not required in the state of Bengal. As quoted by ANI, she said “I handed over a letter to him (Amit Shah), told him that of the 19 Lakh people left out of NRC, many are Hindi speaking, Bengali speaking and local Assamese. Many genuine voters have been left out. This should be looked into. I submitted an official letter.”

West Bengal leader met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to discuss the matter of renaming the Bengal state. The leader is also said to have invited the Prime Minister for inaugurating a coal block in the state.

Previously, Trinamool Congress had announced to hold a mass rally across the state to protest against the publication of NRC list in the adjoining state of Assam. Mamata Banerjee had also termed the NRC exercise as “fiasco”.

The meeting has created a series of speculation in the minds of opposition parties. Many leaders have questioned the timing of the meeting as Mamata Banerjee was among the few who skipped the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi for his second tenure. The leader had also skipped many meetings organized by the Central government on various occasions.
