Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Rajasthan’s Kota, Om Birla will be the NDA nominee for the Lok Sabha Speaker Post. An election for the Lok Sabha Speaker Post is slated for tomorrow, June 19.

In the recently held national polls, BJP Candidate from Kota Om Birla registered a victory by defeating Ramnarain Meena of Congress with over 2.5 lakh votes.

Who is Om Birla?

Om Birla is a two time parliamentarian from Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha Seat of Rajasthan. Associated with Bharatiya Janata Party for long, Birla has served as BJP Yuva Morcha President at State Level for six years from 1991-1997 and was subsequently held the position of vice-president at the national level of BJP Yuva Morcha from the year 1997-2003.

He started his career in mainstream politics as MLA from Kota South Assembly Seat in 2003. He has been elected to Rajasthan Assembly three times consecutively from the same seat. During 2003-08, Om Birla was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS) rank in Rajasthan Government.

He was also a member of the Standing Committee on Energy in Parliament, member of Committee on Petitions and Consultative Committee for Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

He was active in Student Politics and was a Union President in the year 1979.

Bharatiya Janata Party picked Om Birla for the post of Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha. It should be noted that BJP Senior Leader and Former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi was also considered among the frontrunners for the post. She has been kept out of the Council of Ministers too.

Election to elect a new Speaker of the House will be held on June 19th. While the President Ram Nath Kovind will address the joint session of both the houses  Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha –  on 20th June.
