All women’s polling stations, staffed by women, were set up in Karnataka to empower women.

The all-women booths aimed at empowering women were almost 400 in number out of the total 30,164 polling booths. Voting in these booths was allowed for both men and women.

“The Sakhi booths were staffed by 10 women, including 4 polling personnel, 3 asistants and three constables with two outside and one inside the booth, Sanjiv Kumar, Karnataka Chief Electoral officer told IANS. “The objective of all women’s booth is to empower them and demonstrate their capability to conduct free and fair polling as in the case of men,” he added.

Many people are unaware of the ‘pink booths’  operating across the state. Bangalore, the satate capital, had the most number of ‘Sakhi’ groups in the state. Bangalore rural had 46 f such groups, 45 in Udupi-Chikmangalur, 30 in Chikkaballapur, 34 in Mysore, 22 in Tumkur, 28 in Mandya, 20 in Dakshina Kannada, 12 each in Kolar and chitradurga, 14 in Hassan.

“The response has been good and the voter turnout picked up as the day progressed. Many voters were curious to know how we manage the exercise,” a female presiding officer from a sakhi booth told IANS. As the first phase of elections concluded in Karnataka, the second phase  is to begin on the 23rd.
